NATIONAL CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (NCDC):

 

The Government established the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) in 1980 to facilitate the development of curriculum that responds to the learners’ and the country’s needs. The NCDC works through national subject panels comprising representatives of teachers, teacher-training institutions, the Inspectorates, teacher associations and subject specialists. 

LESOTHO DISTANCE TEACHING CENTRE (LDTC)

Lesotho Distance Teaching Centre has two programs being  literacy programmes and continuing education programmes which are intended to offer educational opportunities for out-of-school youth and adults who are unable to benefit from the conventional education system. The continuing education programme offers Sic JC (Junior Secondary Certificate) and seven COSC ( Senior Secondary Certificate) courses through distance learning mode and has centres in six districts across the Lesotho country.

NON-FORMAL EDUCATION

NFE is defined in Lesotho as ‘‘activities that are designed to provide the Basotho youth and adults with development information, knowledge and skills required for them to function effectively, efficiently and productively in the various sectors of life’’. NFE exists to address education needs of the youth and adults who have been by-passed by the formal education system.

 

The role of NFE is to supplement and complement efforts of formal education.

TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

TEACHING SERVICE DEPARTMENT (TSD)

 

The Teaching Service Department (TSD) is the Governement Institute of the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) which is mandated to administer the Teaching Service under the overall supervision of the CEO Teaching Service. The Teaching Service has a total establishment of about 16 000 Primary School Teachers and Secondary School Teachers. The majority of schools in Lesotho belong to Government, Christian Denominations, Community and Private. Teachers are employed by the Gorvernment through the Teaching Service commission (TSC) except for Private Schools

TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT(TVD)

 

The MoET through the Technical and Vocational Department (TVD) is the umbrella body which has the primary mandate of first ensuring an adequate supply of well-trained manpower in all trades and occupations, and second to conduct continuous evaluation of programmes to establish the relationship between training, job performance and employers’ requirements or national needs. This mandate filters to the operational responsibilities as follows: regulatory practices aiming to improve the quality of delivery systems and mechanisms through curriculum development; inspection and assessment; accreditation of programmes and institutions; administration of trade tests to determine skills proficiency levels of workers; support in terms of provision of workshops and equipment; training of staff at TVET institutions and schools; and continual assessment of skills need.
